Getting Involved

A party with a purpose

by Mary Odbert

Everyone appreciates a successful party. It’s an opportunity for friends, family or community to gather and enjoy themselves. A successful gathering or event can also be hosted to benefit community members. Yolo Hospice is very fortunate to have the support of community members who have created events that raise funds for Yolo Hospice, thereby supporting the agency’s mission of caring for those with life-limiting illness and their loved ones.

Yolo Hospice has no major or signature fundraising event of its own. Yet these generous, wonderfully coordinated, and independently sponsored events allow Yolo Hospice to engage fully in the events.

“Yolo Hospice relies on these groups and individuals who sponsor independent events on our behalf,” said Doug Jena, Yolo Hospice Executive Director. “We are grateful for their commitment to Yolo Hospice and their personal dedication to helping others in their community.” Meet three representatives of groups currently coordinating fundraising events for Yolo Hospice.

Yolo County Cabrillo Civic Club #26
For eight years the Cabrillo Club has held a fundraiser for Yolo Hospice. This year’s fundraiser is a Pedro (pronounced peedro) card game party, scheduled for October 22nd. The Cabrillo Club has donated over $15,000 to Yolo Hospice from event proceeds. “As a civic club we want to recognize those worthy organizations doing good things for the community,” said Betty Cadwallder. “We feel privileged to fundraise for Yolo Hospice because we appreciate Yolo Hospice’s efforts and the service it gives to patients.”

Woodland Sunrise Rotary
According to Rotary International, Rotarians, provide humanitarian service and help build goodwill through service to others. Their motto is “service above self.” Julia Larson, President of the Woodland Sunrise Rotary says the Salmon BBQ and Auction, scheduled for October 1st, is their foundation’s largest annual fundraiser.  Yolo Hospice and two other local non-profits are this year’s beneficiaries.

“All the Sunrise Rotary Foundation’s gifts go to support youth, health and education in Yolo County,” said Larson. “Club members had personal experiences with hospice and a familiarity with the good works they do. We are pleased to be able to include them as a beneficiary of this event.”

There are also individuals who enjoy being with their friends and family and want to use what they enjoy to benefit others. Yolo Hospice has many of these energetic, philathropic people produce fundraising events over the years. Currently, The Mexican Open Committee represents the largest group of individuals working on one or more event that benefits Yolo Hospice.

Mexican Open Committee
The Mexican Open Committee (MOC) was created by Tony Cueva, his family and friends to host a golf tournament that celebrates their love of golf and the Mexican culture. “The golf tournament was popular immediately,” said Tony Cueva. “We knew we wanted to have that popularity work for a local organization. Everybody I know has had a family member or someone they know use hospice. We knew the donation would make a difference at Yolo Hospice, and we had a great response from them since the beginning.” Over the years, the MOC has donated over $35,000 to Yolo Hospice from event proceeds.

Funds raised from these events go directly to with providing patients with nurses who deliver expert clinical care, social workers who provide practical and emotional support, spiritual care counselors who help patients and loved ones with spiritual issues, hospice aides who provide personal care, and bereavement specialists who help loved ones in their grief, and service to any community member grieving a lost loved one.
