Spiritual Care

Serious illness is a time of profound change for people and their families. Spiritual care, from a broad spectrum of religious and spiritual traditions, is a core hospice service and available to all patients and their loved ones.

Every person has a spiritual dimension, those non-material aspects of life represented in our relationships with family, friends or a greater power, which provide meaning in our lives. These life values guide our response to life limiting illness. Some people express their spirituality through religion, others do not.

The Yolo Hospice Chaplains/Spiritual Counselors support patients and families living with life-limiting illness.

A Hospice Chaplain/Spiritual Counselor will call to offer an initial visit with each patient.

Areas of Attention

  • Explore "meaning of life" questions
  • When requested, make a referral to patient's faith community
  • Provide a safe environment to express both positive and difficult emotions for both patients and their caregivers
  • Offer preparation for death
  • Administer sacraments when desired
  • Conduct rituals as requested
  • Help plan memorial, funeral, graveside, or other rituals following patient's death

Anyone in the family may request spiritual counseling or referral to community pastoral care services by calling Hospice Chaplains/Spiritual Counselors at 530-758-5566.

Quotes

Judy Alexander
"What I am always taken by in this work is people's willingness to become exactly who they are - to be real and completely present to what each moment brings, as if each moment were a gift."
~Judy Alexander, RN, CHPN, Director of Patient Care Services
