Getting Involved

Be a Volunteer

Yolo Hospice volunteers come from all walks of life and from all sectors of the community. We have a variety of opportunities for those who would like to volunteer their time and talent. You can work in many different settings, with patients, in the office, at home or in the Yolo Hospice Thrift store.

Bereavement Volunteers

Bereavement volunteers call families and caregivers after their loved one has passed away to offer support and information on our individual grief counseling and support group programs for children and adults. Contact Denise Rose at (530) 758-5566.

Special Event and Fundraising Volunteer/Friends of Yolo Hospice

These volunteers assist the Community Relations Department staff with fundraising project and events. Contact Sharon Blaha at (530) 758-5566 or email sblaha@yolohospice.org.

Thrift Store Volunteers

Thrift Store volunteers work at the Woodland store, receiving donations, maintaining displays and assisting customers. Call Lynne Morrin, Thrift Store Manager at (530) 668-1599.

Office Volunteers

Office volunteers assist with periodic mailings and other clerical tasks in our offices, or sometimes working from home. Contact Nancy Bodily, Volunteer Services Manager (530) 758-5566, or email nbodily@yolohospice.org.

Board of Directors

Members of the Yolo Hospice Board of Directors all serve on a volunteer basis. The Board oversees the operations of Yolo Hospice. If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors please contact Jody House, Board Secretary, by emailing at jhouse@yolohospice.org.

Patient Care Volunteers

Patient Care Volunteers are a vital part of our team giving support, help, and companionship to patients and their families. All Patient Care Volunteers go through a training course to prepare them for working with patients and families. The services they provide include: companionship, reading to the patient, letter writing, errands, household chores and filling in when family members need a break.

A big part of a volunteer's effort is simply befriending the patient and family; from their relationship flows the specific set of services needed.

Patient Care Volunteers are asked to be available an average of four hours per week. Typically, a volunteer is assigned to a single patient and remains with them as long as the patient is with Yolo Hospice. Because each illness, each patient, and each family is different, we assign the volunteer we believe will best meet the needs of the situation.

Volunteer Training

Training for Yolo Hospice patient volunteers takes place seven times each year. Trainings are held at different locations in the Sacramento area and Davis. The Sacramento Hospice Consortium handles registration. The classes include a total of 24 hours of training. The cost of the training is $35. To download a registration form to fill out and mail to the Consortium, click here. For additional information on the training program, or for future training dates and locations, call the Sacramento Hospice Consortium Volunteer Response Line at (916) 388-6288 or visit www.sachospice.org
To speak with the Yolo Hospice Volunteer Services Manager, Nancy Bodily, call (530) 758-5566, or email nbodily@yolohospice.org.

Quotes

Judy Norton
"Coping with terminal illness is all consuming for patient and family. As a hospice nurse, I feel it is most important to advocate, respect and use the knowledge we have to make the end of life the most comfortable it can be while always keeping in mind the unique needs of each patient."
~Jody Norton, RN
