VolunteersAs a nonprofit, Yolo Hospice has as great a need for volunteers as other organizations. We need help in the office, with special projects, for fundraising activities and in our thrift store. Unique to hospice though is the role of Patient Care Volunteer. Patient Care Volunteers are a vital part of our team giving support, help, and companionship to patients and their families. All Patient Care Volunteers go through a training course to prepare them for working with patients and families. The services they provide include giving companionship, reading to the patient, letter writing, errands, household chores and filling in when family members need a break. A big part of a volunteer's effort is simply befriending the patient and family, from their relationship flows the specific set of services needed.

As a hospice nurse, I feel it is most important to advocate, respect and use the knowledge we have to make the end of life the most comfortable it can be while always keeping in mind the unique needs of each patient." ~Jody Norton, RN |
